We thought we’d share with you the story of on of the participants of the Rotherham Summer camp. We hope this demonstrates the impact these camps can have on a child in a short space of time.
Meet Rosie, 11 Years Old.
Rosie is a year 6 student from Badsley Primary School in Rotherham. She’s considered very creative, loves to read, draw and perform. Rosie’s Deputy Head Teacher, Ms. Hawkins, nominated her for this opportunity to make films and learn about the process of making films during our ‘Adaptation’ week at Rotherham College.
Rosie initially came to us with a preface from parents that she might be nervous at first whilst joining in with us and might be quiet to begin with.
This was very quickly abated when she realised that her friends, Ella & Eva, were both with us for the week. However she didn’t just work with them, she creatively led her groups when working with others and quickly made new friends. The was tangibly evident when at the end of the week she exchanged phone numbers with her fellow students.
Rosie’s parents were both delighted for her that this week with Ciné Schools was made available as she’s always wanted to make films and act wherever and whenever possible. Having previously taken part in an enrichment project at the Civic Theatre in Rotherham last year.
Since then Rosie hasn’t had many opportunities outside of school with one off events being difficult to come by or cancelled at the last minute. Paid for filmmaking activities are not possible for Rosie in Rotherham.
Roșie directed, storyboarded, pitched, acted, filmed & lit our productions, she also composed and performed the soundtracks for all three films during her week. Her wonderful focus to ensure that what they made could be as good as possible came with a lot of patience and negotiation with her cohort of creatives and teachers.
As we handed over the set and filming equipment to them Rosie was the first to take the lead with ‘Quiet on Set’. She ensured they were all on time and even offered to step into other roles when she saw they needed filling.
Rosie brought her entire family to the screening to see her film. Her parents were extremely proud of her and would love her to have more opportunities like this in the future.
If this is what we are to expect from students in Rotherham moving forward then they’re diligent, kind, curious and generous with their time for others. A model student across all of Ciné School Academies and Studios.
