Big Give Christmas Campaign 2025
Many of you may remember that last Christmas we raised money for a Girls Empowerment Programme in Rugin. We have just had the 6 month report from Nepal which we will be sharing very soon.
This year we’ll be asking for support for our ‘Stay Strong Appeal’ as we move on from Start Strong (final report here)
“After we visited the health facility for ANC and delivery, it made a huge difference in both our health and the baby’s.”
– Mother in Rugin
Aim
To support two remote, mountainous health posts providing primary healthcare for over 6,000 people. Continue to improve access to maternal and child healthcare and nutrition, reducing malnutrition. Empowering communities to utilize services and health posts to increase capacity.
Situation
Bajura is one of the most remote districts of Nepal, with an incomplete road, often blocked in winter, access is challenging. The local health services have budgets for medicine, however they are struggling due to a lack of staff and difficult transportation. Over the last 3 years we have increased services. More women are now getting the antenatal care they need, there are less malnourished children (17% to 2%). We are starting to hand over services to the government.
Solution
By working with local government health staff our Auxiliary Nurses Midwives (ANMs) will be able to support government staff with access to extra resources and information. Increased resources allows for community outreach work and extra capacity. With a well resourced handover period, transferring services back to government will be more sustainable. Acute malnutrition is decreasing. It is essential that this continues to see a reduction in chronic malnutrition (stunting).
Campaign Aims
- Increase number of screenings of children under 5 for malnutrition.
- Increase proportion of full term pregnancies where the mother attends all 8 antenatal care visits as recommended by maternal health guidelines.
- Continue to increase proportion of births attended by a health worker.
- Continue to support government staff with increasing the number of consultations in the health centres.
- Develop and work to a clear phasing out action plan with the local government.
Campaign Budget
- £4,000 – Medicines, office supplies and health post building costs
- £6,000 – Transport and Support costs
- £3,000 – Community Orientation and Outreach programme
- £12,000 – 2 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives
