Although PHASE’s work has a strong focus on the health of mothers and children particularly under 5. Our health staff are the first line of health care for the whole community.
In Bajura there was recently a case of a 19-year-old male who lives with his father, mother, and wife. They are farmers. His wife is pregnant and continues her studies at school. He works as a labourer in the community and financially supports his family.
One evening the PHASE staff were called back to the health post to manage an emergency case. The patient described that, in the morning he felt severe pain in his groin and testis area while walking to visit family. The pain was very severe. His wife searched for help, but there were no houses or people nearby. She sent an SMS to her family. Then his family gathered some community people, and they carried the patient to a nearby traditional healer, but the pain was not relieved. The patient then requested to be taken to the health post for treatment. A group of people managed to carry him to the health post.
The PHASE staff checked his vital signs and on examination, found the testis to be swollen, and one testis elevated. The PHASE staff phoned the staff team in Kathmandu for additional advice and followed their instructions, administering pain relief and oxygen.
This case was serious and required surgery so he was referred to Nepalgunj Hospital for further management. The travel to Nepalgunj is around 2 days in a very rough jeep. Finally, the patient reached Nepalgunj Hospital. He was admitted and underwent surgery which saved his life. He was discharge after 10 days.
His family were very happy with the service from PHASE and give thanks. By reaching the health post on time, receiving health services, following the health workers’ suggestions, and making a timely decision to refer to a hospital his life was saved. If his family had trusted only the traditional healer, his life might have been lost. He is very thankful to the PHASE staff for giving him a new start. PHASE is very important in our community because it saves the lives of many people.
