The PHASE Family

We talk about the PHASE family a fair amount when we are out and about chatting to supporters about what we do, but I thought in this article we’d have a look at what this means in reality.

PHASE Nepal, PHASE Worldwide and PHASE Austria are all completely independent organizations set up with our own boards of Trustees and governance structures. This gives us the autonomy to make our independent decisions, although of course this isn’t true when you consider the hierarchy present due to funding sadly.

PHASE Worldwide has 3 part time staff and Kate that works freelance. We all work from home and essentially, we are a fundraising branch. We do get involved in evaluation and monitoring as a requirement by many funders and a responsibility we see to our supporters in the UK. Our team in the UK is made up of staff that have experience in fundraising as well as international development, nutrition and administration and governance needed to run a small charity in the UK. Much of the funding in the UK comes from Trust and Foundations but also a significant number of monthly donors and a range of events and campaigns.

PHASE Austria have no paid staff. They have a very dedicated , knowledgeable and experienced team of Trustees that have been very successful over the last few years of bringing in institutional (Austrian Development Agency among others) money. This has been a hugely import ant part of running the programmes in the Far West of Nepal. Another new three year project in Bajura and Humla is just about to begin.

And of course the glue and the purpose that holds us all together is PHASE Nepal. PHASE Nepal currently support around 11 health posts and have around 60 staff. They are made up of a research team, a project team and fundraising team. The central office is in Kathmandu Valley and the rest of the staff are across the country co-ordinating projects in health posts and schools, mostly in the Far West of Nepal.

So how do we work together?

Every 6 months we get together and identify what the main challenges are coming up. We collaborate on funding. For example the funding PHASE Worldwide has agreed for Rugin, Bichhya and Jair is being used as a match for obtaining funding from an Austrian funder. In the UK we have been successful with applying for a Big Give Small Charities week match pot which we know we don’t have the supporters to ask (we need you for the Spring and Christmas campaigns!) so we have collaborated with PHASE Austria to ensure we’ll be able to claim the whole pot awarded. We also support each other on articles and social media. There is no point in just using an article once!
