Mandevi Budha lives in a village in Mugu. Located on the high terrain of the village and 3 days of walking distance from the nearest road. She used to grow tobacco in her home garden which the local people would smoke. People did not have the habits of consuming vegetables neither did they knew how to grow them well. After getting involved in our nutrition programme, she has become one of the active farmers growing vegetables all year-round.
“I am amazed how using a plastic greenhouse makes it possible to grow vegetables even in and cold, dry seasons. I grew a lot of cauliflowers, onions, and cabbages this winter and even grew enough to share with relatives. I found that food is tastier with vegetables and it has now become a habit to consume vegetables every day. People also come to ask me for suggestions regarding their farms and I enjoy helping them. I feel very good about my work.”
Our programmes aim to empower individuals to make changes in their lives. By learning how to grow vegetables all year round, Mandevi has not only provided her family with nutrient-rich food, but she has also started prioritising crop production over tobacco growth. This may consequently improve the health of the community.
