The Story

74 year old legendary global adventurer and author, Rosie Swale Pope (MBE) is running solo from the UK to Kathmandu to raise money to support PHASE Worldwide and their charity work in Nepal.

Rosie first began this mission in 2018 and made it all the way to Northern Turkey before the worsening Covid-19 situation during 2020 meant that she had to return to the UK to rethink her route.

After much planning (and a quick mini adventure from Lands End to John o’ Groats) Rosie Runs to Kathmandu was reborn! Rosie left from Sussex once again on 25th June 2021 on her new route which will take her through Norway, Lapland, Russia and Tibet to finally make it all the way to Kathmandu.

Throughout her life Rosie has completed numerous marathons in some of the world’s most challenging terrains and has embarked upon many adventures including trekking across Chile on horseback and sailing across the globe in a small boat.

In 2003, aged 57, she began a five-year run-around-the-world, travelling 20,000 miles to raise awareness for the early diagnosis of cancer, and to raise funds for an orphanage in Kitezh, Russia. Rosie is the only person in the world to have completed this solo challenge unsupported, carrying all her belongings in her cart behind her.

The Journey

Now, at the age of 74, Rosie has taken on an exciting, new challenge: a run of 6,000 miles from Brighton all the way to Kathmandu in Nepal in support of PHASE Worldwide. Rosie is doing this to show the world that age is not a barrier when it comes to achieving your dreams.

Part way through the challenge (when Rosie had reached Czechia), PHASE was able to organise for Rosie to carry a satellite tracker so that everyone could follow her journey in real time. (although she began her run in Brighton, UK in July 2018). Keep an eye out on this page for regular live updates with Rosie’s location. *Not active during Rosie’s mini challenge in the UK.

How to Help

Rosie is completing this run to raise money for PHASE Worldwide’s project work in Nepal. PHASE runs health, education and livelihoods programmes in communities living in some of the most remote areas of the Nepalese Himalayas.

By taking on this epic adventure, Rosie hopes to highlight our work whilst inspiring others to follow their dreams whatever age they may be!
