Today, I am filled with sadness and excitement to be writing this on my last day of volunteering with PHASE Worldwide. Sadness, because I will no longer have the opportunity to work with the hard-working, inspirational, kind and generally all-round great staff in the office; however, excitement as I will be embarking on a new career journey in an International Development organisation; which, undoubtedly, I would not be doing if it were not for my voluntary experience with PHASE.
I have volunteered with PHASE since April 2018 (5 months) as Trusts and Grants Researcher. I started volunteering at PHASE as I was seeking to change my career to work in the International Development sector. Having a legal background and relatively limited practical experience of working within a charitable organisation; I quickly learned the importance of gaining experience within an International Development charity.
I was attracted to volunteering with PHASE in particular as, having researched the work the charity carries out, I was extremely keen to assist with development projects with such a strong focus on sustainability, where ultimately the aim is complete the project cycle having empowered isolated Nepalese communities with the skills and services needed for them to continue to better their own lives and break the cycle of poverty.
Volunteering with a small organisation has given me great insight into the how the charity operates and whilst my role has been primarily research based, I have also had the opportunity to assist with a variety of tasks such as: grant applications, administrative tasks, donor relations and project budgets.
I have always felt as though my time volunteering with PHASE has been valued by the organisation and it is very much a ‘two-way street’. Often people see volunteering as giving up their time for the a greater good; however, I can safely say I have gained so much in return; through both an invaluable understanding into the sector and developing an array of practical skills. It has also been an extremely rewarding experience.
