Leaving a gift in your will can make a difference to the lives of those you care about. This act of kindness is often felt for generations.

Making a will is important as we don’t know what our futures hold.  It is an essential part of financial planning yet, incredibly, one in three people die without having made this provision. A will is the only way to guarantee that your family, friends and charities get what you want them to from your Estate. Making a will is easier than some people think and it ensures that your assets are safeguarded and passed to those you wish to benefit.

Why Leave a Gift in your will?

Charitable legacies are the foundation for many good causes in the UK and are vital in continuing their work.  74% of the UK population support charities and when asked, 35% of people say they’d happily leave a charity gift in their will – the problem is that only 7% actually do.

Legacy donations to PHASE are often amazingly generous and protect the future of our organisation. They allow us to continue to support essential health, education and livelihood work in very remote villages which lack access to basic services such as health and education.

Charity gifts in your will are also very tax efficient.  If your estate is worth more than £325,000* it will be liable to inheritance tax (IHT) at 40% (£130,000 on an estate of £325,000). This must be paid before any of your beneficiaries receive anything. However, you can reduce or avoid this tax if you leave your estate, or part of it, to an exempt beneficiary. Any gift to a charity is usually exempt from inheritance tax and is deducted from your estate before inheritance tax. So, a charitable gift could bring the value of your estate to below the threshold for inheritance tax. This should have very little effect on its value for other beneficiaries.

Furthermore, if you choose to include a charitable gift in your will of at least 10% of your estate, the rate of any IHT reduces from 40% to 36%. Consequently non-charitable heirs will be better off under the measure introduced in 2012*.

Keeping your will up to date

As life goes on, changes happen. You may get married or divorced, have children or grandchildren, receive a windfall or decide to leave some money to an organisation that has influenced your life in some way. It is important to keep your will updated to reflect these changes. This can be done easily by adding a Codicil to your existing will or by rewriting it altogether.
